I ❤️ Holograms: put on these specs and every source of light gets a holographic image of a heart overlaid- in this case a candle flame and a dot from a red laser. Usually these kind of images need a point source of light, whereas these glasses put a heart image on every light- but they also make everything else a bit blurry! The "lenses" in these glasses are actually transmission holograms with the image located at the farthest point in the depth of field.

Microscope Hologram: This photopolymer hologram is so realistic one can look through the eyepiece! Using a halogen bulb as a point light source the microscope in this vintage 1980s hologram pops from the page with stunning detail- and with the eye positioned just right one can see the magnified image of a small insect. Unlike photographs, holograms are recordings of the interference pattern of light waves. This interference pattern can encode 3D images which are revealed by illumination by a point source of light and viewing from an appropriate angle. Perhaps the most amazing hologram in my collection.
Specular Hologram on Vinyl: Lazzretto
For the price of a vinyl LP you can own the amazing artwork of Tristan Duke. This album by Jack White is damn good as well (I also got the digital download with the vinyl purchase).

Specular Hologram on Vinyl: the album Lazaretto by Jack White features this amazing "scratch hologram" of a twirling angel (shown here accompanied by the opening bars from the title track of the album). The hologram was hand etched on the metal master by artist Tristan Duke of Infinity Light Science. The etched grooves reflect a point source of light as sharp glints and the groves are arranged so that each eye sees a slightly different pattern such that, via stereopsis, the shiny points appear to float above or below the surface. This album has a lot of other interesting features including dual grooves that allows for two different intros to one track (depending on where the needled is dropped) and side A plays from the inside out- fun!

Star Wars Specular Hologram on Vinyl: the two LP soundtrack from The Force Awakens featuring two amazing "scratch holograms" of a Tie fighter and the Millennium Falcon- the video barely captures the fullness of the 3D effect as the spaceships seem to hover above the surface of the record. These holograms were hand etched on the metal masters by artist Tristan Duke of Infinity Light Science. The etched grooves reflect a point source of light as sharp glints and the groves are arranged so that each eye sees a slightly different pattern such that, via stereopsis, the shiny points appear to float above or below the surface.

In 2016 these sold for $250 for the stand and hologram! Sometimes avialable here:

Star Wars Digital Hologram: full color digital holography brings to life “A New Hope: Death Star Battle” using the latest technology in 3D imaging. This hologram image is comprised of 734000 hogels (hologram pixels) and comes with its own display stand that illuminates from below. Unlike photographs, holograms are recordings of the interference pattern of light waves. This interference pattern can encode moving 3D images which are revealed by illumination by a point source of light and viewing from an appropriate angle.

Death Star Specular Hologram on Vinyl: Stars Wars box set features this amazing "scratch hologram" of a rotating Death Star with a 3D appearance that seems to float above the album. This hologram was hand etched on the metal master by artist Tristan Duke of Infinity Light Science. The etched grooves reflect a point source of light as sharp glints and the groves are arranged so that each eye sees a slightly different pattern such that, via stereopsis, the shiny points appear to float above or below the surface. Also included is the Tie Fighter specular hologram featured on The Force Awakens sound track album set.

Magnifying Glass Hologram: this photopolymer hologram is so realistic one can look at the circuit board through, or around, the lens in this 1980s reflective hologram. Unlike photographs, holograms are recordings of the interference pattern of light waves, and incredibly what you see is created by information encoded in a layer thinner than a piece of paper! This interference pattern can encode the entire 3D light field, which can present the original object in amazing detail, including how the light was bending through a lens, when illumination by a point source of light and viewed from an appropriate angle. A favorite hologram in my collection.

360° Animated Spinning Hologram: this 3D running horse animation is a prototype of the vDisk toy which features a photopolymer type reflective hologram, which interestingly, is computer rendered and digitally produced. Unlike photographs, holograms are recordings of the interference pattern of light waves, and amazingly all the information needed to create a moving 3D image is encoded in a layer thinner than a piece of paper, and the image is revealed by simply illuminating the hologram by a point source of light. Many thanks to Tim Rowett of Grand Illusions Ltd. for sending me this astonishing example of holographic animation!
